Citizen's Academy
The Florence Police Department’s commitment is to provide dedicated, quality, professional public safety service in partnership with the community it serves through enforcement, education, and prevention. In an effort to be more integrated into our community, the Florence Police Department utilizes an innovative approach for creating an environment where citizens of our community can learn more about their justice system and their police department through the Florence Police Department’s Citizens Academy.
This program is an excellent opportunity for the community to meet the members of our community’s police department, to see what the department does from a different perspective, and gain a better understanding of what is involved in providing public safety services. Participants can expect to be provided a unique opportunity to view the justice system from a different perspective than they are used to having. Participants will be asked to accompany police officers on two separate “ride-alongs” as part of the course.
Some of the topics that members of the Academy class are exposed to include how the cycle of domestic violence can be broken, how a case is handled through the courts, how 911 emergency calls are entered and dispatched, and learn about the impacts and dangers of methamphetamine in the “meth awareness” class.
Participants have an opportunity to see actual field sobriety tests in a controlled environment, be able to learn how not to become a victim of Identity Theft, know what to do if they become a victim, and have the opportunity to learn to protect themselves, or loved ones from fiscal elder abuse.
The academy provides participants with the opportunity to get a glimpse of what the future is for law enforcement technology applications and actually participate in the Range 3000 “Shoot/Don’t Shoot” computerized scenario simulator after being exposed to the legal requirements over the use of force, including deadly force.
Sgt. Harry Johnson is the coordinator for the Citizen’s Police Academy. Members of the justice system, including the Florence Police Department participate in presentations in the academy. Participation includes Florence Police Officers, Florence Police Communication Officers, Florence Reserve Police Officers, and Florence Police Auxiliary members. Other agencies participating include the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Lane County Justice Court, Florence Municipal Court, Lane County Parole and Probation, Siuslaw Outreach Services, Western Lane Ambulance, and Siuslaw Valley Fire.
People may apply for this learning opportunity provided they are 18 years of age or older, have not been convicted of any felony, have not been convicted of a misdemeanor offense within the past 12 months, and who are not on current probation, parole, or in any type of court ordered diversion or treatment program. Requests for waivers to these requirements will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
For further information on the Citizens Academy, please contact Sgt. Harry Johnson at 541-997-3515.
