School Resource Officer

The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as a liaison between the Siuslaw School District, the Florence Police Department, and the community itself. Officer Brian Goss is the current SRO. The purpose of having a SRO is to have a police presence on various campuses promoting a positive image through interaction with the students, parents, teachers, school counselors, and school administrators. The thrust of the promotion of a positive image is through the establishment and maintenance of a problem-solving partnership through working in a collaborative effort with the various stakeholders involved.

The primary benefit is for the SRO to promote a safe environment in and around the schools in that the SRO deals with all law enforcement problems that arise within the school, the immediate vicinity of the school, or in the school district's jurisdiction. The SRO also is able to supplement the school with classroom information and speak with groups of students on such topics as Methamphetamine Awareness, Alcohol Awareness, the Grim Reaper Program, and much more.

During the summer break the SRO returns to a traditional policing role supplementing the Patrol Division, attends training, or takes a period of vacation. Even in the role of working as a patrol officer, the SRO can still impact the children of the community as he is able to during the school year.

The current agreement with the SRO between the City of Florence and the Siuslaw School District is from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2012 with the agreement to fund the position jointly for the term of the agreement. The split in the funding proportional to the amount of time in the school versus in patrol.

Unfortunately during the 2008/2009 budget process made continuing this position for the next school year not possible. We hope to reinstate this important position soon.
